Most of the antigen tests detect a different part of the virus than the spike protein that is more heavily mutated in Omicron. The commonly used PCR tests amplify multiple virus genes, 2 of the 3 used still work well for Omicron, the third one usually drops out - a quick and dirty read-out for suspect samples that are then usually sequenced. // Kary Mullis, the inventor of the PCR test said that it should NOT be used as a diagnostic tool and a positive result is NOT a case. </s><s> This is because of the large number of false positive results. </s><s> Each positive result requires much further detailed investigation before being confirmed.
